17th Annual Millarville Rodeo 2013

The exciting infield at Millarville

High flying

Bucked off, it only got worse with a hand caught in the saddle and being dragged by an angry horse

More chilling spills, thrown into the stands

The vanquished

Got him . . . .  now for the wrestling part

Charging the ring to start her barrel racing run

Eying the turn

15th Annual Millarville Rodeo, 2011

Getting ready . . . . . a young bull rider gets some help taping his glove as he pysches up for the ride to come

. . . . lotsa help in the chute . . . .

Tied to the beast, grip set, ready for the pull . . . .

. . . . and out of the chute . . . . its a long eight seconds

The spectacle . . . .

Its all about the eight seconds . . . .

The start of the charge . . . . she'll be rocketing into the infield for her turn at Ladies Barrel Racing . . . .

Tight turn . . . .

She lost her hat but this young miss in the Millarville and area Ladies Barrel Racing still glows from the thrill . . . .

Bert Davis, the Coppertown Clown, and one of the Muttley Crew are fairly indistinguishable.

Needed supplies . . . . just in case

The wild ride . . .

Coming in for a landing . . . .

Hangin' out at a rodeo . . . .

Millarville Rodeo 2010

The Wild Horse Race was very aptly named, these gents trying to tame their quarry as another fellow in the background is getting thoroughly thrashed in his own struggle to the death as the 14th Annual Millarville Rodeo opened with a bang. This photo was a first place ribbon winner in the "Action" category at the 103rd Annual Priddis & Millarville Fair photography competition

Telling a joke in a sea of cowboy hats . . . . a rodeo is always a place to catch up . . . .

Calf roping is a rough business, with the quarry going down . . . . .

. . . . and the hands going up, signalling the stoppage of time, hoping the knot is good . . .

Getting the message out for sponsors is part of any rodeo . . . . .

C

Tall in the saddle, ready for his turn . . . .

. . . . with a rope just so . . .

They were bucking high . . . .

. . . .with often painful and indeterminate outlooks . . . .

The next generation was watching it all very carefully . . . .

 . . . . and so was the opposition . . . .

. . . . while the clown made merry . . . .

. . . . and drew a laugh from the Calgary Stampede Queen and Princesses . . . .

He was a dead eye with a rope . . . . .

She was rounding the final turn hard in barrel racing . . . . .

. . .  but her opponents were going hard too . . . ..

This young fellow was flying high . . . .

. . . . while this gent took the express elevator to the ground floor  . . . .

Once Upon A Time In The Old West

It was "Once Upon A Time In The Old West" at the Millarville Market on the August long weekend, benefiting the Sheldon Kennedy Foundation. And what's a Wild West Show without some trick riding . . . .

. . . . . and some sneak-up-behind, trick ambushing

It was hard to keep your hat on with all the action . . . .

Old-time announcers and rodeo clowns were on hand . . . . although not too good at steer wrestling when it came to that part . . . . the expressive and tongue-tied steer eventually won the day against this overmatched pair . . .

There were miniature chuckwagons pulled by miniature horses . . . .

. . . . and tough cowboys . . . .

There was also gun play . . . . .

. . . . . and people shootin' back . . . . .

. . . . . some buckin' too . . . .

. . . . . with some folks getting stomped real good . . . . .

. . . . . although the cowboys came back hard and fast . . . .

. . . . and how 'bout that trick roper . . . .

. . . . or the famous actress . . . . .

. . . . . who was game for some dust in her eyes . . . .

. . . . all benefiting ex-NHL player Sheldon Kennedy's Foundation, with himself coming in for a smooth landing at the end of the day.

Guy Weadick Rodeo and Chucks,

High River, 2010

AND . . . . . they're offfffffffff!!!! Chuckwagon racing at the Guy Weadick Rodeo event in High River, Alberta, June, 2010

The finishing push . . . . . it's a close one.

Getting physical in the steer wrestling . . . .

Flying high . . . . . and oh it's going to hurt coming down.

Longview Stampede - July 2009

Incoming!!!! Horse 1, Cowboy 0. The cowboy survived for a re-ride - his third unsuccessful try of the night - but someone in the stands needed medical help after he landed on them.

Another hard landing . . . . . . in fact, the very same guy as above who had three consecutive unsuccessful re-rides. This was one of those small town rodeos where the horses seemed to win a lot more than the cowboys did, Very few of the contestants managed to ride their steeds successfully.

A couple of wranglers try to hold on as their objectionable quarry takes them for a rather dusty ride across the infield in the Wild Horse Race

Hangin' on for those magical eight seconds

Cornering hard in the Ladies Barrel Race

Guy Weadick Rodeo - High River - June 2009

It's a rough ride for this cowboy at the Guy Weadick Rodeo in High River

Miss Rodeo Okotoks laughs off the antics of the rodeo clown directed her way

Always intense out of the start  . . . . High River is where the sport of chuckwagon racing originated

Down to the wire

Nanton Rodeo

Gotcha!!!

Longview Stampede 2008

He's about to enter the chute for calf-roping at the Longview Stampede but this cowboy seems to take a moment to call on a higher power for aid.

In the chute, hat buttoned down, one hand on the rein  . . . . . ready to go . . . .

It's grit and bear it for eight seconds for this cowboy in bareback . . . . .

He's down . . . . .

. . . .  it hurts . . . .

. . . . . but you've got to get up

. . . .  and reach for that hat

Mayhem to the left, dead calm to the right . . . . . it's the wild horse race at the Longview Stampede where a cowboy has climbed aboard his disagreeable horse while the judges straddling the fence seem to be ignoring his plight and engaging in a leisurely conversation

The next generation . . . . .

. . . . . and the grizzled veteran, looking every bit like The Marlboro Man . . . .

An orderly rope is the thing . . . . .

A mighty mite cowgirl has full control of her horse on the final turn of the barrel race . . . .

A cowgirl races a lowering sun for the final barrel across the treeless prairie  . . . .

The crowd . . . . . including an unlikely German television crew beside me as I was shooting.

The sun sets behind the hotel and some young cowhands at a small town Alberta rodeo . . . .

NINETY MINUTES AT THE GREATEST OUTDOOR SHOW ON EARTH

A Friday afternoon and I had an hour and a half to scoot around the midway, exhibition halls and barns of the Calgary Stampede . . . . . no rodeo, chucks or fireworks on this visit. . . . . . a sampler of a week that draws more than 1.3 million visitors.

A cowboy gets his priorities straight, one hand latching on to the pretty girl and the other keeping his hat on as they twirl on a breezy midway ride.

Never ending chilling thrills

A cotton candy tour of the stables . . . .

Flattening out the wool on a sheared sheep is apparently the way to winning a prize, as these two lasses work hard to get their animal ready for the show ring.

A dare-devil encounter with an Alpaca . . . .

Some kilt-wearing cowboys line up for some early day two-stepping fun inside the Nashville North tent, where it all ends late in the evening at the Stampede.

A cool carnie reels 'em in . . . . . STEP right up!!!

All manner of slice and dice do-dads could be bought in the Exhibition halls . . . . .

MILLARVILLE RODEO, 2008

Steer Wrestling, Millarville Rodeo, June 1, 2008

It was a dusty day

Small-time rodeo, big-time pain

GUY WEADICK RODEO AND PRO CHUCKWAGONS, HIGH RIVER, ALBERTA, LATE JUNE, 2007

With his quarry successfully roped after a head start and his highly-trained steed hitting the brakes, this cowboy slams into the dirt with his heels, lariat in his mouth ready to tie this calf up at the feet after wrestling it to the ground . . . . . . the best time of the day was less than five seconds.

A cool afternoon in the stands means even a smile can't sell many beer for this young lady . . . .

In a sea of cowboy hats, serious talk . . .

The moment of disaster in the second chuckwagon race, just before the finish line in a neck-and-neck race  . . . . the lead left horse on the outer rig goes down, the driver already pulling back on the reins to stop his rig while his competitor notices the tangle. The horse had died mid-stride of a heart attack.
